Alignment Machine Not Detecting Targets? Common Causes and Service Tips

An alignment machine that cannot detect its targets can stop an alignment before it even begins.

The system may show missing targets, lose one wheel during measurement, display unstable readings, or repeatedly ask the technician to reposition equipment. Sometimes the issue is simple, such as a dirty target or blocked camera view. Other times, it may involve damaged clamps, communication problems, calibration, or failing electronic components.

1. Dirty Targets or Camera Lenses

Alignment targets and camera lenses operate in a shop environment filled with dust, grease, fingerprints, and debris.

Even a light coating can interfere with the camera’s ability to recognize the target pattern. Targets and lenses should be cleaned carefully using materials approved for the equipment.

Harsh chemicals or abrasive cloths may damage reflective surfaces or optical components.

2. Blocked Camera View

The cameras need a clear line of sight to each target.

Tool carts, lift columns, open vehicle doors, technicians, equipment, or other objects may block the view. A target mounted at an unusual angle may also fall outside the camera’s usable range.

The vehicle and surrounding work area should be positioned according to the equipment manufacturer’s requirements.

3. Damaged or Bent Target Clamps

Target clamps must hold each target securely and in the correct position.

A bent clamp, loose mounting point, damaged jaw, or worn adjustment mechanism can allow the target to move during measurement. This may create unstable readings or cause the machine to lose recognition completely.

Clamps should be inspected for looseness, damage, and proper fit on the wheel.

4. Damaged Targets

Alignment targets can be dropped, struck, scratched, bent, or contaminated during normal shop use.

Damage may not always be obvious. A target can look acceptable but still produce recognition problems if its reflective pattern or mounting surface is affected.

A target that repeatedly fails in different wheel positions should be inspected closely.

5. Camera Position or Calibration Problems

If the camera bar has been moved, bumped, or knocked out of position, the system may struggle to locate targets correctly.

Calibration may also be affected by equipment movement, impact, changes to the rack, or improper setup.

A system that consistently loses multiple targets may require camera inspection or calibration support.

6. Poor Lighting or Reflections

Strong sunlight, glare, reflective surfaces, shadows, or unusually bright shop lighting can interfere with some camera-based alignment systems.

Changing the vehicle position, reducing direct glare, or correcting the lighting may help determine whether the issue is environmental or equipment-related.

Target recognition should remain stable under normal shop conditions.

7. Communication or Cable Problems

Some alignment systems use wired connections, while others rely on wireless communication between components.

Damaged cables, loose connectors, weak batteries, interference, or failing communication modules can cause targets or sensor heads to disconnect.

An intermittent connection may make the problem difficult to reproduce, especially if the equipment works normally at other times.

8. Software or Computer Issues

The alignment computer, software, drivers, and internal settings all affect target recognition.

A frozen program, failed update, incorrect configuration, or communication error may prevent the system from processing target information correctly.

Repeated software errors, slow operation, or unexpected shutdowns should be diagnosed rather than ignored.

9. Rack or Lift Position Problems

The alignment rack must place the vehicle within the system’s usable measuring area.

If the rack is uneven, positioned incorrectly, or raised outside the recommended range, the cameras may not see the targets properly.

Rack movement and leveling problems can also affect measurement accuracy after the targets are detected.
