Automotive Lift Lowering Too Slowly? Common Causes and Service Tips

An automotive lift that lowers too slowly can disrupt the entire service bay.

The lift may come down unevenly, pause during descent, move only when the release is held a certain way, or take much longer than normal to reach the floor. In some cases, the problem is minor. In others, it can point to a hydraulic restriction, valve issue, damaged hose, mechanical binding, or improper adjustment.

Signs Your Lift May Have a Lowering Problem

Common symptoms include the lift lowering much slower than usual, one side coming down faster than the other, the lift stopping partway down, jerky movement during descent, unusual noises, or the lowering control feeling inconsistent.

If technicians are having to fight the lift or repeatedly operate the lowering control to bring the vehicle down, the equipment should be inspected.

1. Restricted Lowering Valve

The lowering valve controls how hydraulic fluid returns to the reservoir.

If the valve becomes partially blocked, contaminated, or damaged, fluid may not flow back fast enough. This can cause the lift to lower very slowly or stop during descent.

A technician can inspect the valve and determine whether it needs cleaning, adjustment, or replacement.

2. Contaminated Hydraulic Fluid

Old or contaminated hydraulic fluid can affect valve performance and restrict normal flow.

Dirt, moisture, metal debris, or degraded fluid may collect inside the hydraulic system and interfere with the lowering circuit.

The fluid condition should be checked if the lift has become slower over time.

3. Damaged or Restricted Hydraulic Hose

A hydraulic hose can become kinked, crushed, internally damaged, or restricted.

Even if the hose is not visibly leaking, internal damage may reduce fluid flow during lowering.

Hoses should be inspected for wear, sharp bends, rubbing, and deterioration.

4. Mechanical Binding

The hydraulic system may be working correctly, but the lift could be binding mechanically.

Worn rollers, slide blocks, cables, chains, pulleys, or carriage components may create resistance as the lift lowers.

Rust, debris, damaged components, or poor lubrication can also make movement less smooth.

5. Safety Locks Not Releasing Properly

If the safety locks do not fully release, they can interfere with the lowering process.

One lock may release while the other remains partially engaged, causing the lift to hesitate, bind, or lower unevenly.

The release cables, lock mechanisms, springs, and adjustment should be inspected.

6. Incorrect Cable or Chain Adjustment

Two-post lifts rely on cables or chains to help keep both sides moving together.

If the equalization system is out of adjustment, one side may carry more load or move differently from the other.

This can create uneven or slow lowering and place extra stress on other components.

7. Overloaded or Unevenly Loaded Lift

A vehicle that is too heavy or positioned incorrectly can affect how the lift moves.

The lift should always be used within its rated capacity, with the vehicle positioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Improper weight distribution can also cause one side to move differently during lowering.

8. Cold or Incorrect Hydraulic Fluid

Hydraulic fluid becomes thicker in cooler temperatures.

If the wrong fluid is being used, or if temperatures are unusually low, the lift may lower more slowly than expected.

The correct hydraulic fluid should always be used for the specific lift.

Why Slow Lowering Should Not Be Ignored

A lift that is lowering too slowly may still work, but it can be an early sign of a larger problem.

Ignoring it may lead to longer bay times, uneven operation, damaged valves, hose problems, mechanical wear, or unexpected equipment downtime.

If the lift is also jerking, binding, leaking, or lowering unevenly, service should be scheduled sooner rather than later.
