Automotive Lift Safety Locks Not Engaging? What Shops Should Know

Automotive lift safety locks are designed to support the lift after it has been raised. If the locks are not engaging properly, releasing unevenly, or making unusual noises, the problem should not be ignored.
A lift may still move up and down even when part of the safety system is not working correctly. That does not mean the lift is safe to use.

Signs of a Lift Safety Lock Problem
Lift lock problems can appear gradually or happen suddenly.
Common warning signs include:
- One lock engages before the other
- The locks do not engage at the same height
- No clicking sound while the lift is raised
- The release handle feels loose or difficult to operate
- A lock stays engaged after the release is activated
- The lift lowers unevenly
- The technician must repeatedly pull the release cable
- The lock teeth appear worn or damaged
- The lift makes unusual popping or scraping noises
- One side of the lift rests differently from the other
If the safety locks are not working consistently, the lift should be inspected before continued use.
1. Damaged or Misadjusted Release Cables
Many two-post lifts use cables to release the safety locks on both columns.
Over time, the cable may stretch, loosen, bind, fray, or move out of adjustment. This can cause one lock to release while the other remains engaged.
A release cable should move smoothly and activate both sides correctly.
2. Worn Lock Teeth or Components
The locking system relies on metal components that engage as the lift rises.
Repeated use can wear the lock teeth, pivots, springs, or related hardware. Worn parts may not catch securely or may release inconsistently.
Visible damage, excessive wear, or missing hardware should be addressed promptly.
3. Broken or Weak Springs
Springs help move the locking mechanism into the correct position.
A broken, stretched, or weakened spring may prevent the lock from engaging fully. The lift may still make some noise, but the lock may not seat properly.
Springs should be inspected along with the surrounding hardware.
4. Dirt, Grease, or Debris
Shop equipment operates around dust, grease, metal debris, and other contaminants.
Buildup around the locking mechanism can restrict movement. A lock may stick, drag, or fail to return to its normal position.
Cleaning may help in some cases, but the mechanism should still be inspected for wear or damage.
5. Uneven Lift Adjustment
If the lift is out of adjustment, one side may rise or lower differently from the other.
This can cause the locks to engage at different times or place uneven stress on the safety system. Cable equalization, chain adjustment, hydraulic operation, and column alignment may all affect how the locks work.
Uneven movement should be diagnosed rather than treated as a normal lift characteristic.
6. Bent or Damaged Lock Components
Impact, improper operation, or long-term wear can bend parts of the locking mechanism.
Even a small amount of damage can keep the lock from lining up correctly. Bent components should not be forced back into operation without determining why the damage occurred.
7. Hydraulic or Mechanical Problems Affecting Lock Engagement
Sometimes the lock problem is connected to another issue.
A lift that raises unevenly, drifts downward, jerks during movement, or has worn cables may not reach the locking positions correctly.
The full lift system should be checked rather than looking only at the release handle.
Should the Lift Still Be Used?
A lift with unreliable safety locks should not stay in regular service.
The locks are part of the lift’s safety system. If they are not engaging, releasing, or supporting both sides correctly, technicians and vehicles may be placed at risk.
Stop using the lift and schedule an inspection if:
- The locks do not engage
- Only one side locks
- The lift rests unevenly
- The release mechanism is damaged
- The lift drifts after being raised
- Technicians are unsure whether the locks are holding
Do not rely only on hydraulic pressure to support a raised vehicle.
