Lift Motor Runs but the Lift Won’t Raise? Common Causes

You press the lift control button and hear the motor running—but the lift barely moves or does not rise at all.

This can be especially frustrating because the power unit sounds like it is working. However, a running motor does not necessarily mean the hydraulic system is producing enough pressure to raise the vehicle.

The issue may involve low hydraulic fluid, a damaged hose, a weak pump, a stuck valve, air in the system, or another hydraulic or mechanical problem.

Signs Your Lift Has a Raising Problem

Common warning signs include:

  • The motor runs, but the lift does not move
  • The lift rises only a few inches
  • The lift raises slowly or struggles under load
  • The motor sounds strained or unusually loud
  • The lift moves without a vehicle but not with weight
  • The lift rises unevenly
  • Hydraulic fluid is visible near the power unit or columns
  • The lift jerks or pauses while raising
  • The reservoir fluid level keeps dropping
  • The lift worked intermittently before stopping

A lift that cannot raise normally should be taken out of service until the cause is identified.

1. Low Hydraulic Fluid

Low hydraulic fluid is one of the first things that should be checked.

The motor and pump may run, but the system cannot generate proper lifting force if there is not enough fluid in the reservoir.

Low fluid may be caused by:

  • A leaking hydraulic hose
  • Loose or damaged fittings
  • Worn cylinder seals
  • A leaking reservoir
  • A power-unit leak
  • An incorrect fluid level after service

Simply adding fluid is not a complete repair if the system is actively leaking.

2. Hydraulic Fluid Leak

A leak can prevent the system from developing enough pressure to raise the lift.

Leaks may occur around hoses, cylinders, fittings, valves, the reservoir, or the power unit. Some leaks create an obvious puddle, while others appear as damp areas or a gradual loss of lifting performance.

A damaged hydraulic hose should be replaced rather than temporarily patched.

3. Weak or Failing Hydraulic Pump

The electric motor powers the hydraulic pump, which creates the pressure needed to raise the lift.

The motor may continue running even when the pump is worn, damaged, or unable to produce sufficient pressure.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Slow lifting
  • No movement under load
  • Unusual whining sounds
  • Excessive heat
  • Intermittent operation
  • The lift rising normally without a vehicle but struggling with weight

The pump and pressure output may need to be tested.

4. Stuck or Damaged Lowering Valve

The lowering valve controls the return of hydraulic fluid to the reservoir.

If the valve is stuck partially open, contaminated, damaged, or not sealing correctly, the pump may circulate fluid without building enough pressure to raise the lift.

This can make the motor sound normal while the lift remains stationary.

5. Air in the Hydraulic System

Air inside the hydraulic system may cause jerky movement, slow operation, unusual noise, or reduced lifting performance.

Air can enter the system after a leak, hose replacement, low-fluid condition, or improper servicing.

The system may need to be inspected and bled according to the lift manufacturer’s procedures.

6. Clogged Pickup Tube or Hydraulic Restriction

The pump must draw hydraulic fluid freely from the reservoir.

A clogged pickup screen, damaged suction tube, contaminated fluid, or internal restriction may prevent adequate fluid flow.

The pump may run loudly or struggle because it is not receiving enough fluid.

7. Incorrect or Contaminated Hydraulic Fluid

Using the wrong hydraulic fluid can affect lift performance, especially when temperatures change.

Old or contaminated fluid may contain moisture, debris, or degraded material that interferes with valves and pump operation.

The fluid type and condition should be checked before components are replaced.

8. Overloaded Lift

Every automotive lift has a rated capacity.

A lift may operate normally with lighter vehicles but struggle or refuse to raise when overloaded or when the vehicle’s weight is distributed incorrectly.

The vehicle weight, lift capacity, arm positioning, and center of gravity should always be confirmed.

Never continue holding the raise button to force an overloaded lift upward.

9. Mechanical Binding or Uneven Adjustment

The hydraulic system may be working, but another component could be preventing movement.

Possible causes include:

  • Binding carriage components
  • Damaged rollers or slide blocks
  • Incorrect cable adjustment
  • Worn chains or pulleys
  • Bent lift components
  • Uneven column installation
  • A safety lock that is not releasing properly

A complete inspection may be needed to determine whether the problem is hydraulic or mechanical.

Should the Lift Continue Being Used?

A lift that will not raise normally should not remain in service.

Repeatedly running the motor can overheat or damage the power unit. Forcing the lift may also worsen a hydraulic leak, pump problem, or mechanical issue.

Stop using the lift if:

  • It cannot raise the vehicle smoothly
  • The lift moves unevenly
  • Hydraulic fluid is leaking
  • The motor sounds strained
  • The lift jerks or stops unexpectedly
  • The shop is unsure whether the vehicle is within capacity

Do not work beneath a vehicle unless the lift is properly raised and resting securely on functioning safety locks.
