Signs Your Wheel Balancer May Have a Shaft Problem
Common symptoms include visible shaft movement during the spin cycle, vibration from the machine, changing readings between spins, unusual noise, a wheel that does not appear to rotate smoothly, or technicians having trouble getting the machine to repeat the same result.
If the balancer repeatedly gives inconsistent readings even when the wheel is mounted correctly, the shaft and mounting system should be inspected.
1. Bent Balancer Shaft
A bent shaft can cause the wheel to rotate off center.
This may happen after impact, improper use, or excessive force while installing or removing a wheel.
Even a small bend can affect balancing accuracy.
2. Worn Shaft Bearings
The shaft is supported by bearings inside the machine.

Rust, dirt, wheel weights, grease, or debris can prevent the wheel from sitting flat against the mounting surface.
Even a small obstruction can create noticeable movement while the wheel spins.
The shaft, cone, adapters, and wheel mounting surfaces should be kept clean.
6. Spindle or Hub Damage
Damage to the spindle or hub assembly can also cause movement during operation.
This may happen gradually from wear or suddenly after an impact.
If the machine has visible movement even without a wheel mounted, the spindle assembly should be inspected.
7. Calibration Problems
A mechanical problem and a calibration problem can sometimes create similar symptoms.
If the shaft appears stable but the readings still change repeatedly, the machine may need calibration or sensor diagnostics.
A proper inspection can help determine whether the problem is mechanical or electronic.
